Description

Drummond Bone, editor. The Cambridge Companion to Byron. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2004. Pp. 330. $70.00 cloth/$24.99 paper. The Friend was one of many publications where Coleridge aspired to create companionship between readers and writers. He crystallized that ideal in the famous metaphor, "the reader, who would follow a close reasoner to the summit and absolute principle of any one important subject, has chosen a Chamois-hunter for his guide" (55). Though Coleridge was often condemned as a compulsive "monologist" and plagiarist, these apparent denials of the dialogic stand in contrast to many invocations of his reader as a companion in dialogue, and the way his writings, a mosaic of citations, create an intertextual community of readers and writers. (2) Works like Biographia Literaria, Lay Sermons, Aids to Reflection, The Watchman, and The Friend could be said to pioneer the idea of a literary Companion.
